Medicinale paddenstoelen
Functional mushrooms is the common name for species such as Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Chaga that are valued for their long tradition of use in food and folk practice, rather than for any psychedelic effect. In this part of the shop you will find our tincturen van paddenstoelen, liquid extracts sold as food supplements, and a gourmet Oyster liquid culture for people who work with mycology.
What counts as a functional mushroom?
There is no legal definition. In practice the term covers edible and traditionally used species that people take for their own sake, as part of a daily routine, as opposed to culinary mushrooms bought only for cooking or the psilocybin species found elsewhere in our shop. Several of them have a recorded history that goes back centuries: Reishi and Lion's Mane in East Asia, Chaga in Northern and Eastern Europe, where it grows on birch trees in cold climates.
Choosing between the two sections
This hub has two sub-categories, and they are meant for very different people.
| Section | Wat het is | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Tincturen | Ready-made liquid extracts of Lion's Mane, Reishi and Chaga in dropper bottles | People who want a functional mushroom product to use as part of a daily routine |
| Gourmet & functional liquid cultures | A 20 ml syringe of living Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) mycelium | Hobby mycologists and people doing microscopy, education or research work |
If you simply want to use a functional mushroom, the tinctures are the place to start: nothing to prepare, measure with the dropper and follow the instructions on the label. The liquid culture is a genetics product. It is sold for microscopy, taxonomy, education and research, comes with a needle and disinfectant wipes, and should be kept in the refrigerator at 2–8 °C, where it keeps for up to 2–3 months.
Why we do not make health claims
EU rules strictly limit what may be said about food supplements, and many claims you will see online for functional mushrooms are not permitted. So we describe what each mushroom is, where it comes from and how the product is used, and leave it there. If you want background reading, our articles on Reishi, Chaga, Lion's Mane en Cordyceps and on mushrooms in the supplement industry give more context. If you take medication, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using any supplement.

Veelgestelde vragen
What are functional mushrooms?
Functional mushrooms are species such as Lion's Mane, Reishi and Chaga that have a long tradition of use in food and folk practice. The term is informal and not a legal category. At Mondo they are sold as tinctures, alongside an Oyster liquid culture for mycology work.
Are functional mushrooms the same as magic mushrooms?
No. They are different species from the Psilocybe mushrooms and truffles in our other categories. Our functional mushroom tinctures are sold as food supplements, not as psychedelic products.
Which functional mushroom products does Mondo sell?
We sell Lion's Mane tincture (30 ml), Reishi tincture (30 ml) and Chaga tincture (30 ml and 50 ml). For mycology work there is also an Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) liquid culture syringe.
Do functional mushrooms have proven health benefits?
We do not make health or medical claims, and EU rules restrict such claims for food supplements. We describe the traditional use of each mushroom and how to use the product, nothing more.
Can I use the Oyster liquid culture to grow my own functional mushrooms?
The Oyster liquid culture is sold as a genetics product for microscopy, taxonomy, education and research purposes, and we do not give cultivation instructions for it. Store it in the refrigerator at 2–8 °C and use it within 2–3 months.
