1. Green Mold

What Not to Do With a Suspected Contaminated Grow Kit

One of the biggest mistakes is trying to “repair” a grow kit immediately.

Avoid digging into the substrate, cutting suspicious areas away or removing the substrate from its container simply to inspect it.

Doing so can introduce additional contamination, disturb healthy mycelium and make it more difficult to determine what originally happened.

If there is obvious mold growth, isolate the grow kit from other cultivation projects and avoid disturbing the affected material unnecessarily.

Can You Save a Contaminated Mushroom Grow Kit?

It depends on what is actually happening.

If the apparent contamination is really bruising, metabolites or normal mycelium, there is nothing to “save” because the grow kit may be perfectly healthy.

A genuinely established mold contamination is different. Once a competing organism has colonized part of the substrate, simply removing the visible portion does not guarantee that the organism has been eliminated.
