Magic Mushroom Grow Tracker & Growth Stages

Growing mushrooms is a process that develops in stages. From the moment you activate a Magic Mushroom Grow Kit or start a Ready-to-Grow Bag, the mycelium and mushrooms continue to develop until the first harvest is ready.

Knowing which stage your grow is in can make it easier to understand what you are seeing and what to expect next. Growth times are never exact, but following the timeline gives you a useful reference throughout the process.

How Long Does a Magic Mushroom Grow Kit Take?

The exact growing time depends on the strain, environmental conditions and individual grow kit. Some mushrooms develop quickly, while others naturally need more time.

After activation, the substrate first needs time to adjust to its fruiting environment. The first visible signs of mushroom formation are usually small pins. Once these appear, development can accelerate considerably as the mushrooms begin to mature.

A slower grow does not automatically mean something is wrong. Temperature, humidity, genetics and the specific strain can all influence the speed of development.

The Different Mushroom Growth Stages

Although every grow develops at its own pace, a typical grow can be divided into several recognisable stages.

1. Starting Your Grow

For a traditional grow kit, the process begins when the kit is activated according to its instructions and placed into its growing environment.

A Ready-to-Grow Bag works differently. Because the substrate is already colonised and prepared for fruiting, it does not require the same activation process as a traditional grow kit.

2. Mycelium and Fruiting Conditions

Before mushrooms appear, the colonised substrate responds to its new environment. During this period, you may notice changes in the appearance of the white mycelium, moisture levels or the surface of the substrate.

It can sometimes feel as though nothing is happening during this stage, but visible mushrooms are only one part of the growing process.

3. First Pins Appear

The appearance of the first mushroom pins is one of the most important milestones. Pins are very small developing mushrooms that emerge from the colonised substrate.

Once pinning has started, check your grow regularly. Mushrooms can develop surprisingly quickly from this point onward.

4. Mushroom Development

After pinning, the mushrooms begin increasing in size and their characteristic features become more visible. Stems elongate, caps expand and individual mushrooms may grow at different speeds.

It is completely normal for mushrooms within the same grow kit or grow bag to differ in size. Some may mature earlier than others.

5. Harvest

The final stage of the first growing cycle is the harvest. Correct timing is important because mushrooms can mature quickly once they reach their final stages of development.

Always follow the instructions provided with your product when deciding when and how to harvest.

Why Is My Grow Taking Longer Than Expected?

A grow tracker provides an estimated timeline rather than a guaranteed harvest date. Mushroom cultivation involves living mycelium, which means no two grows develop in exactly the same way.

Factors that can influence growth speed include:

  • mushroom strain and genetics
  • temperature
  • humidity
  • fresh air exchange
  • substrate condition
  • environmental stability

Some Psilocybe cubensis strains naturally fruit faster than others. A grow that takes several days longer than expected can therefore still be perfectly healthy.

Grow Kit vs Ready-to-Grow Bag

Although both products ultimately produce mushrooms from colonised substrate, their starting points are different.

A Magic Mushroom Grow Kit follows its own activation procedure before entering the fruiting stage. A Ready-to-Grow Bag, on the other hand, is supplied pre-colonised and ready to begin its growing process without the same activation procedure.

This is why the Grow Tracker asks which product you started. Selecting the correct product allows the timeline to better match the expected development of your grow.

What If My Grow Does Not Match the Tracker?

Do not worry if your mushrooms are slightly ahead of or behind the estimated timeline. The tracker is designed as a guide to the mushroom growing stages, not as an exact prediction.

What you actually see in your grow kit or grow bag is more important than the number of days shown on the tracker.

If your grow appears to have stopped completely, you notice unusual colours or you are unsure whether the substrate is developing normally, use our Troubleshooting Tool to check the situation step by step.

Track Your Grow from Start to Harvest

Keeping track of your start date makes it easier to follow the complete growing process. Instead of remembering how many days have passed, the Mondo Grow Tracker shows you where your grow is likely to be and what stage comes next.

Save or bookmark your personal tracker after entering your start date. You can return to the same link throughout your grow to follow its progress from the first day until harvest.
