A magic mushroom grow box is a closed, transparent container that keeps the air around a grow kit humid while still letting enough fresh air in during fruiting. You do not need one for a first grow, because every Mondo grow kit comes with a filter bag that does the same job. A box becomes worth it when your room is dry or unstable, when you grow kit after kit, or when you want to combine light, heat and humidity in one setup.
What does a magic mushroom grow box do?
A grow box creates a small, stable climate around the kit. During fruiting, mushrooms need two things that work against each other: high humidity, so the young pins do not dry out, and fresh air, so carbon dioxide from the mycelium does not build up. A filter bag balances these through a filter patch. A grow box does the same with filtered air holes and more air volume.
The Mondotub is Mondo’s grow box. It is made of clear acrylic, measures about 26 × 26 × 33 cm and comes with a sheet of 24 filter patches. It fits standard Mondo grow kits.
When is the supplied grow bag enough?
The supplied filter bag is enough for most first grows in an ordinary living room. If your kit stays at 23 to 25 °C, you see small droplets inside the bag and you can air the bag one to three times a day once pins appear, there is little a grow box adds.
The grow bag has one limitation: space. Tall strains and heavy flushes can press against the plastic, and folding the bag open every day to exchange air is a small disturbance each time.
When does a grow box make a difference?
A grow box makes the biggest difference in four situations:
- Dry indoor air. Central heating in winter or air conditioning in summer pulls moisture from a filter bag faster. A larger, closed volume of air holds humidity more steadily.
- Repeated grows. A box is reusable. For growers who start a new kit every few weeks, it replaces a new bag each time.
- Tall or heavy flushes. More headroom means mushrooms grow straight instead of bending against the bag.
- A complete setup. A box pairs naturally with a heat mat under it and an LED light next to it, so you control all fruiting conditions in one place.

What should you look for in a grow box?
Look for four things, whichever box you choose:
How do you keep a grow box clean?
Clean the box before every new kit. Wash it with warm water and mild soap, rinse, then wipe all inner surfaces with a disinfectant and let it dry with the lid off. Replace used filter patches when they look dirty or have been wet. Old mushroom tissue or substrate crumbs left in a box are one of the easiest ways to start the next grow with contamination.
Use the box for fruiting, not for colonization
Mondo kits arrive fully colonized. The box is for the fruiting stage. Follow the grow kit manual for soaking and preparing the kit, then place it in the box when you start fruiting conditions.
What do the Mondotub bundles include?
The Mondotub is available on its own and in bundles. The Pro Bundle is the complete version and includes the Mondotub, an LED grow light with a built-in timer, a 7 W heat mat with controller, a silicone heat guard, an adhesive thermometer strip, a disinfectant mist bottle, a water mist bottle, filter patches and a Large (1200 cc) grow kit in the strain of your choice.
If your room is often below 22 °C, a heat mat with a heat guard is the most useful addition. Our guide to grow kit temperature in winter explains how to set it up, and the article on fruiting conditions covers light and fresh air.

Mondo Ready-to-Grow Bags are designed to fruit inside their own bag, so they do not need a box. The Mondotub is made for grow kits. Our guide on how to use a ready-to-grow bag covers the bag’s own routine.
Yes. Filtered holes let air in, but opening the lid briefly once pins have formed refreshes the air faster. Follow the fresh-air routine for the fruiting stage.
The Mondotub is sized for a standard Mondo grow kit. More kits mean more carbon dioxide and less room per flush, so one kit per box gives the most predictable result.
Only lightly and only if the walls are clearly dry. Mist the walls, never the substrate or the pins directly.
Not quite. A monotub usually refers to a tub filled with bulk substrate that you colonize yourself. The Mondotub is a fruiting chamber for a colonized grow kit.
