In the McKennaii vs Golden Teacher choice, Golden Teacher is the more forgiving strain and the better first grow, while McKennaii grows faster, taller and denser once conditions are right. Both are Psilocybe cubensis, so the care is the same; the difference is in how much a mistake costs you and what the flushes look like.
How do McKennaii and Golden Teacher differ?
The short version is temperament. Golden Teacher tolerates small swings in temperature and humidity and still fruits. McKennaii rewards stable conditions with large, heavy mushrooms, but reacts more clearly when the room is too cold or the bag too dry.
| Golden Teacher | McKennaii | |
|---|---|---|
| Species | Psilocybe cubensis | Psilocybe cubensis |
| Difficulty | Easy | Moderate |
| Colonization (Mondo strain library) | 10 to 20 days | 10 to 18 days |
| First harvest after activation | About 2 to 3 weeks | About 2 to 3 weeks |
| Flushes | 2 to 4 | 2 to 4 |
| Caps | Golden brown to yellow, 2 to 8 cm | Caramel to golden brown, about 3 to 8 cm |
| Stems | Thick and sturdy, pale | Tall, thick and pale |
| Best for | First grow, learning the process | Second grow, growers with a stable room |
The timings come from the Mondo strain library and are ranges, not promises. A kit at 20 °C will be slower than the same kit at 24 °C, whichever strain it is.
Which strain is easier for a first grow?
Golden Teacher is the easier strain for a first grow. It is the reference strain most guides are written for, it pins reliably in an ordinary living room and it does not mind if you are a day late with airing the bag.
That makes Golden Teacher a good teacher in the literal sense. You learn what healthy pins look like, when the veil starts to tear and how the kit behaves between flushes, without the strain hiding your mistakes or exaggerating them.

What makes McKennaii different in a grow kit?
McKennaii is known for vigorous growth and tall, dense fruiting bodies. Growers usually describe it as quick to colonize and quick to pin once the kit is in fruiting conditions. The Mondo strain library rates it as moderate rather than easy, and in practice that means it shows stress sooner: a cold room or a dry surface tends to give fewer pins or a smaller first flush rather than the same harvest a few days later.
If you already grew one kit successfully and you can keep a room at 23 to 25 °C, McKennaii is a logical next step. If your house drops to 18 °C at night, either choose Golden Teacher or put a heat mat with a heat guard under the kit.
Slow McKennaii? Check the thermometer first
A kit on a cold windowsill or near a draughty door is the most common reason a strain seems slow. Move the kit to the warmest stable spot in the house before changing anything else.

Which strain gives the bigger harvest?
Neither strain wins by default; harvest weight depends far more on kit size, temperature stability and how many flushes you get than on the strain name. Both strains produce two to four flushes in a Mondo kit, with the first flush usually the largest.
What you will notice is the shape of the harvest. Golden Teacher gives a more mixed flush with mushrooms of different sizes. McKennaii tends to push up fewer but heavier, taller fruits per square centimeter of surface. For a larger harvest from either strain, choose a larger kit or a ready-to-grow bag instead of switching strains.
How do you tell them apart when they grow?
Young mushrooms of both strains look alike: pale stems, brown caps and blue bruising where you touch them. The differences show as they mature:
- Golden Teacher caps turn golden to yellowish brown and often keep lighter flecks near the edge. Caps open into a wide, flat shape.
- McKennaii caps stay caramel to darker brown, and the mushrooms are often taller with straighter, thicker stems.
Both bruise blue when handled. That is normal for psilocybin mushrooms and not a sign of contamination.
Should you choose by potency?
We do not recommend choosing a cultivation strain on potency claims. Potency varies between individual mushrooms, flushes and grows, and a strain name does not tell you the concentration in a specific harvest. Choose on what you can control: how stable your room is and how much experience you have.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Golden Teacher if it is your first kit, if your room temperature varies or if you want the most predictable result. Pick McKennaii if you already grew a kit, you can keep the kit warm and stable, and you want tall, dense mushrooms. Growers who cannot decide often run both side by side: same room, same routine, two different results to compare.

No. Both are strains of Psilocybe cubensis, but McKennaii is a separate line selected for vigorous growth. The name refers to the ethnobotanist Terence McKenna.
Yes. Both like the same conditions: 23 to 25 °C, bright indirect light and fresh air once pins appear. Keep each kit in its own bag so you can tell the harvests apart.
Golden Teacher is generally more forgiving. A few days that are too cold or a bag that dried out slightly usually costs time rather than a whole flush.
No. Mondo kits of all strains use the same soaking routine between flushes, described in the grow kit manual.
Yes. The Ready-to-Grow Bag XL holds about 2.1 kg of colonized substrate for every strain, including Golden Teacher and McKennaii.
