How to grow Penis Envy mushrooms comes down to the same basics as any Psilocybe cubensis strain (warmth, humidity and fresh air) plus more patience. Penis Envy colonizes in roughly 14 to 21 days and needs 3 to 5 weeks to the first harvest, against 2 to 3 weeks for strains like Golden Teacher, and it punishes unstable conditions with small or aborted flushes.
Why is Penis Envy harder to grow than other cubensis strains?
Penis Envy is harder because it grows slower and produces mushrooms with an unusual structure. The fruiting bodies are dense, with very thick stems and small caps that often stay partly closed. Building that much tissue takes longer, and every day a kit spends in fruiting conditions is another day in which humidity, temperature or contamination can go wrong.
The Mondo strain library rates Penis Envy as an advanced strain with 2 to 3 flushes. That is one flush less than most classic cubensis strains, so the first flush matters more.
| Penis Envy | Golden Teacher (for reference) | |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | Advanced | Easy |
| Colonization | 14 to 21 days | 10 to 20 days |
| First harvest | 3 to 5 weeks | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Flushes | 2 to 3 | 2 to 4 |
| Caps | Small, often stay rounded | Wide, open flat |
Which conditions does Penis Envy need?
Penis Envy needs the conditions from the Mondo grow kit manual, held more consistently than other strains need them:
- Temperature: 23 to 25 °C, and never above 27 °C. A heat mat with a heat guard helps in cooler rooms, but measure on the kit, not in the air above it.
- Light: bright, indirect light. No direct sun on the bag.
- Humidity: keep the filter bag closed before pins appear. Droplets on the inside of the bag are normal.
- Fresh air: open the bag briefly 1 to 3 times a day once pins appear, and reseal it with fresh air inside.
Where Golden Teacher shrugs off a cold night, Penis Envy is more likely to stall for a few days or abort part of its pins.

How do you know when Penis Envy is ready to harvest?
Harvest Penis Envy by the cap edge and the veil, not by the calendar. Many Penis Envy caps never open fully, so waiting for a flat cap, as you would with Golden Teacher, usually means waiting too long.
Look for these signs:
Harvest the whole cluster when most mushrooms show these signs. Leaving a few to over-mature does not give the rest of the flush much extra weight, and old mushrooms are a common starting point for mold. Our guide on how to harvest magic mushrooms shows the twisting technique step by step.
Do not wait for spores
Penis Envy produces few spores and its caps often stay closed. If you are waiting for the dark spore drop you see on other strains, you are almost certainly past the right moment.
What are the most common mistakes with Penis Envy?
The most common mistake is giving up too early. A Penis Envy kit that shows no pins at day 12 is not necessarily failing; the same timeline would worry you with Golden Teacher, but not here. The second most common mistake is compensating for the slow start by changing several things at once.
- Moving the kit around. Every change in temperature resets the clock a little. Choose one spot and leave it there.
- Opening the bag too often. Before pins appear, the bag should stay closed. Opening it to check dries the surface.
- Spraying the substrate. Only mist the inner wall of the bag, and only if it is clearly too dry.
- Ignoring a second flush. After the first harvest, follow the soaking step in the manual. A second flush from Penis Envy is usually smaller, but it is often worth the week.
Is Penis Envy a good strain for beginners?
Penis Envy is not the best first strain. It works in a beginner’s hands when the room is warm and stable, but it gives less feedback: slow growth looks the same when everything is right as when something is slightly off. If you have never grown a kit before, start with Golden Teacher or B+, then move to Penis Envy once you know what healthy pins and a ready-to-harvest mushroom look like.
For growers who inoculate their own substrate, a Penis Envy liquid culture syringe skips the germination stage, which matters more with a slow strain than with a fast one. Our comparison of liquid culture vs spore syringe explains the difference.

Count on 3 to 5 weeks from sealing the filter bag to the first harvest, depending mostly on temperature. Below 22 °C it can take longer.
That is the strain’s normal shape. Penis Envy produces thick stems with small, rounded caps that often stay partly closed.
APE stands for Albino Penis Envy, an albino variant with pale, white fruiting bodies. It shares the dense structure and slower growth of Penis Envy.
Not beyond the recommended range. The manual sets 27 °C as the upper limit; above it, heat stress and bacterial contamination become more likely. Aim for a stable 23 to 25 °C instead.
Yes, often clearly. Blue bruising where the mushroom has been touched is normal and not a sign of contamination.
