APE – Albino Penis Envy (Psilocybe cubensis) Strain

APE, short for Albino Penis Envy, is a pale-pigmented variety from the Penis Envy family of Psilocybe cubensis. It keeps the typical Penis Envy shape (thick, dense stems with small, compact caps) but the fruiting bodies are white, cream or light grey instead of caramel. Like Penis Envy, it grows slowly and is best suited to growers with some experience.

What does APE look like?

APE looks like a Penis Envy that lost most of its color. The stems are thick and dense, the caps stay small and often only partly open, and the whole mushroom is white to cream, sometimes with a light grey tone.

Blue bruising shows up clearly on APE wherever the mushrooms are touched or harvested. That is normal and not a sign of contamination. Our contamination guide shows how to tell bruising from mold.

How does APE grow?

APE grows slowly and less predictably than beginner strains such as Golden Teacher or B+. Its dense structure takes time to build, and like other Penis Envy types it reacts to unstable conditions with fewer pins or aborted pins rather than a later but normal flush.

What helps most:

  • a steady 23 to 25 °C, measured on the bag rather than in the room;
  • bright, indirect light and no direct sun;
  • brief air exchange once pins appear, resealing the corner of the bag with the supplied sticker;
  • as little handling as possible.

When is APE ready to harvest?

Harvest APE by the cap edge and the veil, not by the size of the cap. APE caps often never open fully, so waiting for a flat cap means waiting too long. When the cap edge starts to lift away from the stem and the thin veil underneath shows the first tears, the mushroom is ready. With white caps you cannot use color as a guide, which is why the veil matters even more than with brown strains.

How does APE compare to Penis Envy?

APE and Penis Envy share the same growth habit: dense, slow and with limited spore production. The main visible difference is color. Growers who already know Penis Envy will recognize the rhythm; growers new to both should start with regular Penis Envy or, better, with a forgiving strain first. For an overview of pale strains, see True Albino Teacher strain profile.

Questions about APE – Albino Penis Envy

No. APE is slow and less predictable. Start with Golden Teacher or B+ and move to APE once you know what healthy pins and a ready mushroom look like.

Limited spore production is typical for the Penis Envy family and for pale varieties. It is a genetic trait, not a problem with the bag.

No. The band helps prevent side pins. Mondo recommends leaving it in place throughout the grow.

No. Jack Frost is commonly described as a cross between True Albino Teacher and APE, so APE is one of its parents.
