APE Magic Mushroom Grow Kit – Albino Penis Envy for experienced growers

APE, short for Albino Penis Envy, is the pale-pigmented member of the Penis Envy family of Psilocybe cubensis. It keeps the typical Penis Envy build, with thick, dense stems and small caps that often only partly open, but the mushrooms are white, cream or light grey instead of caramel.

That build comes at a price: APE grows slowly and reacts to unstable conditions with fewer pins or pins that stall. If you have already grown a classic strain and want a step up, it is a rewarding kit. If this is your first grow, start with an easier strain first.

Growing APE successfully

Stability matters more with APE than with almost any other strain. Pick a spot where the temperature does not swing between day and night, and leave the bag alone once it is set up. Every time you move or open it, you risk interrupting pin formation. Expect the first flush to take a little longer than with Golden Teacher or B+; that is the strain, not a failed kit.

Blue bruising is very visible on the pale tissue. It is normal and not contamination.

How to start your APE (Albino Penis Envy) grow kit

The kit arrives fully colonised, so there is no inoculation or sterilising to do. Activation takes one evening and a few minutes the next day:

1. Wash your hands and wipe the outside of the kit clean.
2. Remove the lid, fill the tray with cold drinking water, put the lid back on and place the kit in the fridge.
3. Let the substrate soak for 9 to 12 hours. Up to 24 hours is fine.
4. Pour off the excess water carefully.
5. Pour 150 ml of drinking water into the bottom of the grow bag, place the kit inside, fold the top over twice and close it with the yellow sealing sticker.
6. Put the bag in a warm spot with indirect light.

Under stable conditions the first pins usually show within 10 to 14 days. After each harvest you can soak the kit again for the next flush; with good care a kit gives up to four flushes. The full process, with photos, is in our grow guide.

Growing conditions

Keep the bag at 23 to 25 °C and never above 27 °C, measured at the kit rather than somewhere else in the room. Give it daylight or normal room light, but no direct sun. Condensation on the inside of the bag is a good sign: it means humidity is right. Do not spray water onto the substrate.

In a cool room, a 7 W heat mat with controller keeps the 1200 cc kit in range. Always place a silicone heat guard between mat and kit so the bottom never gets too hot. If nothing happens after two weeks, our troubleshooting center walks you through the most common causes.

When to harvest

Judge APE by the cap edge and the veil, not by size. The caps often never open fully, so waiting for a flat cap means waiting too long. Harvest as soon as the cap edge starts to lift from the stem and the veil shows the first tears. See how to harvest magic mushrooms for the technique.

Storage and shelf life

Keep the kit closed in the fridge at 3 to 5 °C until you start. It keeps for up to three months unopened, but results are best when you start within two weeks of delivery.
